My challenge:

Students in Precalculus CPI publish a presentation using Web 2.0 tools on the concepts in the unit on "Systems of Equations and Matrices".

Description of the challenge and link:

I assigned my Precalculus students to groups of two and their challenge was to review one of the concepts in the unit on "Systems of Equations and Matrices" and create a presentation using Web 2.0 tools. They were expected to research their topic by using current and past textbooks, and also encouraged to look for resources on the web. They were to use a Web 2.0 tool of their choice for publishing their work.

Personal reflection on the process of developing the challenge, learning and implementing the new technology:

My goal was for the students to more actively engage in the exploration and study of the assigned topics and be able to publish their learning in a new and creative way. Initially I thought that I needed to understand and learn how to use all the tools and create one or more examples for the students before assigning this project. This approach presented an obstacle for me because I felt somewhat intimidated and overwhelmed by all the web 2.0 tools and I could not find the time to "play around" with each one. After some conversation and exchange of ideas with colleagues, I came to realize that the students would probably be able to dive in and learn these tools on their own. I didn't need to learn everything before they did (what a relief)!! I asked Winnie Carey to come to my class and make an introductory presentation of these tools to the students and they were off and running on their own!
